SAN DIEGO—Authorities say a Border Patrol agent fired shots at a pickup truck when the driver backed the vehicle toward him during a stop in San Diego County.

An agency spokesman says no one was injured in the incident early Sunday in Potrero.

The driver of the white pickup resisted initial attempts by the agent to stop him. After the truck did stop, the driver started backing up towards the agent, prompting him to fire 3 rounds.

The driver took off in the vehicle and was not caught.

The Border Patrol believes the man was engaged in a smuggling operation. Nine suspected illegal immigrants were found hiding in rocks in the area and were taken into custody.
