Handcuffed Mexican kids steal U.S. border agent car

http://www.reuters.com/article/domesticNews/idUSN2541132320070925

MONTERREY, Mexico (Reuters) - Three Mexican minors detained in California on suspicion of smuggling drugs stole a U.S. Border Patrol car while still wearing handcuffs and drove it back across the border to Mexico.

Police in the Mexican border city of Mexicali said on Tuesday the three boys had been driving a pick-up truck on a remote Californian highway when a Border Patrol agent stopped them.

Suspicious they were carrying marijuana, he handcuffed them and put them in his patrol car while he searched their truck.

"As the agent was doing his search, he left the vehicle running and the keys in the ignition, so one of the lads, still wearing handcuffs, grabbed the steering wheel and they headed back to Mexico," a police spokesman said.

The Border Patrol, which plays cat and mouse around the clock with illegal Mexican migrants and drug traffickers, confirmed the vehicle was stolen in southern California on Sunday and driven over the border near Mexicali.

Mexican police used a helicopter to locate the patrol vehicle in a remote agricultural area near the border.

ATTENTION DRIVERS!

The administrators of the US and of Mexico are using NAFTA to ignore the safety of American and Mexican drivers and of the public.

The workers in Mexico and the US need reform in commercial politics and labor law.

Now is when we have organizations for the improvement of benefits, hours, and work conditions.

The hour to resist this movement to open the (”fro...” “frontera” = border, perhaps?) and break the union is now!

Border Patrol Agent Killed By Wrong-Way Driver

http://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/14070091/detail.html

Two people were killed Friday morning when a woman driving the wrong way on the freeway slammed into a pickup truck driven by a border patrol agent, officials said.

Border Patrol Agent Neil Hepburn, 35, of Tierrasanta, was killed while on his way home from work on state Route 52 in Santee, according to the California Highway Patrol. The CHP said the wrong-way driver, identified as Shayne Leatherwood, 22, was traveling in a Toyota Prius at speeds of 100 mph.

Officer Tom Stromer with the CHP said, "Approximately five minutes after we got our initial reports we tried to get into position to stop the vehicle." But it was too late, as the cars "proceeded to collide head on," Stromer said.Investigators are still trying to determine how she ended up on the freeway going the wrong direction and whether alcohol was involved. Border Patrol agents say Hepburn was just minutes from being home.Hepburn was on his way home from his shift at the Campo station, but had worked at the Imperial Beach station for most of his career with the horse patrol, his coworkers told NBC 7/39. He leaves behind a wife and two young children.

A co-worker, who did not want to be identified, told NBC 7/39, "His family was very important to him. He wanted to work and spend a lot of time with his family. He wanted to change his days off -- whatever benefitted his family -- to be with them the most. His boy, he was teaching him how to ride a horse. Also, his daughter, he was very involved with. It's just devastating to know they'll be without his father now."By noon Friday, word of his death had already spread across the Tierrasanta elementary school that his son attends.Hepburn's brother, who lives in Texas, told NBC 7/39 Neil was the first person in their family to become a U.S. citizen.

Hepburn was from Scotland originally and he became a citizen in order to pursue a career in law enforcement.Richard Smith with the Border Patrol told NBC 7/39, "That's the biggest part of this tragedy. He spent 10 hours defending our borders and doing a job he loved, and on the way home to his family -- it's such a tragedy -- it was a needless accident."

Border agent stabbed during marijuana bust

EAST COUNTY: A woman in a car carrying 186 pounds of marijuana stabbed a Border Patrol agent in the leg while trying to get away yesterday, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection official said.

The agent disarmed the woman and detained her until other agents arrived. He was taken to a hospital and later was reported in good condition, a border official said.

The incident began about 11:50 a.m., when agents got a tip that people were loading something into the trunk of a Chevrolet Impala near Tierra del Sol, off state Route 94 in Campo.

Agents tried to pull over the driver, then used a spike strip to flatten the tires and halt the car on Route 94 west of Buckman Springs Road. The driver jumped out and ran, but the female passenger allegedly used a pocketknife with a 3-inch blade to stab an agent in the left thigh. Agents found marijuana in the trunk, caught the driver and arrested him and the woman. –P.R.

Border Patrol agents seize nearly 1 ton of marijuana

Thursday, August 30, 2007

(08-30) 11:45 PDT BARRETT JUNCTION, Calif. (AP) --

Seven rookie Border Patrol agents seized nearly a ton of marijuana from three vehicles abandoned near the U.S.-Mexico border.

The agents, who graduated earlier this month from the Border Patrol academy, spotted two sport utility vehicles and a pickup truck early Wednesday heading north from the border near the Tecate crossing, about 40 miles east of San Diego.

Other Border Patrol agents in the area were called to join in pursuit of the caravan, which turned back toward Mexico, an agency spokesman said. The drivers left the vehicles and ran across the border.

Agents seized 1,967 pounds of marijuana, a stolen Toyota T100 pickup, a Jeep Cherokee and an Isuzu Trooper.

No arrests were made.
