Fire at Campo

CAMPO -- More than 300 households in Campo were ordered to evacuate their homes early Tuesday as a fast-moving vegetation fire raged along both sides of Highway 94, authorities said.The fire began shortly before 3 a.m., just west of Shockey Truck Trail, according to the California Highway Patrol. Within in an hour it grew to more than 100 acres and threatened more than 300 homes, a CalFire dispatcher said.About 30 engines were sent to battle the blaze, which posed an "immediate life threat" to residents of Campo, she said.

No structural losses were immediately reported.An evacuation center was set up at Mountain Empire High School at 3305 Buckman Springs Road in Pine Valley.
