LAKE FOREST – Deputies arrested a man on a felony warrant after he spit toward a crowd of anti-illegal immigration protesters Saturday in Lake Forest, Orange County Sheriff's officials reported.

Hugo Maldonado, 23, is being held without bail at the Orange County Men's Jail on a federal felony immigration warrant and suspicion of resisting arrest, Lt. Val Wilson.

At about 8:30 a.m., Maldonado was a passenger of a car that drove into a parking lot near a day labor site close to Ganahl Lumber store and a liquor store on the 23100 block of Orange Avenue, Wilson said.

Maldonado spit toward about 40 anti-illegal immigration protesters, Wilson said, but it's unclear whether he struck someone. Deputies, already in the area to keep the peace, saw what happened, spoke with Maldonado and ran his name, Wilson said.

Maldonado led deputies on a short foot pursuit after they discovered that he had an active warrant. Specifics about the warrant are unclear, Wilson said.

Also unclear is whether Maldonado had any connection to the day labor site or the protesters there, she added. Other than this incident, the protest was peaceful.

"You have an isolated, small incident," Orange County Sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino said. "It's too bad that that even happened. Other than that it was really peaceful."
